GOVERNMENT THROUGH UCSAF TO EXTEND COMMUNICATION SERVICES TO STRATEGIC AREAS
The Government, through the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF), is set to begin the implementation of a new phase involving the construction of 280 communication towers, some of which will be built in border areas, wildlife parks, and along major railway routes, the SGR and TAZARA.
UCSAF Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Peter Mwasalyanda, revealed this while in Songwe Region, along the Tanzania–Zambia border, during the working visit of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication, and Information Technology, Mr. Mohammed Abdulla. The visit aimed to inspect the state of communication services in border villages adjacent to Malawi (in Kyela District, Mbeya Region) and those bordering Zambia (in Songwe Region).
He stated that the project seeks to ensure that communication services are available in all areas of strategic importance for national security, tourism, and development.
Speaking about the implementation of the 758-tower construction project, which has reached over 98 percent completion, Engineer Mwasalyanda said the project has connected 1,407 villages that previously had no communication services at all, now providing them with this essential service—an achievement that has improved people’s lives and expanded economic opportunities.
He explained that these successes have brought significant changes to the lives of residents in those areas, who now have access to communication services, financial services, online education, e-commerce, and other digital services that stimulate social and economic development.
Furthermore, Engineer Mwasalyanda emphasized that these projects align with the vision of the Sixth Phase Government, led by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to build a Digital Tanzania—ensuring that all citizens are included and benefit from advancements in communication technology without being left behind.
